Which are the Safest Water Bottles for our Family?

Once again I am confronted with these questions: Is technology always for the best? Are their products for our benefit or just to make a few billion dollars out of us this year?
Do companies put as it risk with dangerous products on purpose or is it just inadvertently?

I don't have all the answers but I have decided to keep the "?" on everything I will buy from now on. Many times, not even the products sold at a Health Food Store are really that safe.

Like I always repeat to my readers and viewers: "WE NEED TO TAKE CONTROL OF OUR LIFE AND OUR MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS". I know! I Know! where do we get the right information to make informed decisions????!!(&^ This my friend, is not an easy task, but we have to put our heart and commitment into it.

I have started my blogs with this purpose, sharing the information I found most appropriate at a certain point in my life. Believe me! My search and my walk on the information rally will not be stopping anytime soon.

One of the BEST places for great information is "THE SOFT LANDING". WOW!! I simply did not know!!!!

We have been talking for a while on the importance of avoiding BPA products and it just so happen that one of the things we thought were a good substitute for regular plastic water bottles is also leaching BPA into our water.

Dr. Ted Herrmann, DMD Holistic Dentist in MOMTV

This past Friday we had a wonderful hour at MOMTV with Dr. Ted Herrmann, D.M.D. He is a super fun Holistic Dentist from the Miami area whom I have had the pleasure to meet.

After starting looking for holistic practitioners in our area, I came across his Practice. Let me tell you! He is my kind of Doc! As I had mentioned before, what I loved the most was his approach to my health as a WHOLE and not just as Mouth full of teeth = $$$. Since I stepped into his office I felt at peace, received by happy friendly staff, and guided by the hand (almost literally) through the process of my exam and treatment. I have learned more about my dental care in 3 weeks that what I had in 35 years!

Autism Undone!

Last night I had the great honor of having a good friend as a Guest Speaker on my Show at MomTv. Her name is Gina Laverde and her story and life journey are a great example of determination and conviction.

After her son, started showing symptoms of Autism and was later on diagnosed with this illness, all of her efforts were directed into CURING her son's AUTISM.

She researched day and night until she found a solution that little by little brought her son back to her. She could see into his eyes again, she was able to enjoy his hugs and smiles one more time. He started to be himself and feel happier and more calm each day.

The changes were not immediate, it certainly took time, but the results to this day are incredible!

Last night she shared with us part of this journey and some of the dietary tools she has been utilizing to fight Autism over the past three years.

Every child is different, and the reasons that have induced Autism in their life may be different, but one there is one thing in common, "A toxic overload" hindering their bodies abilities to fight what is making them ill" . There are treatments for Autism, but we as parents need to observe and understand how are children react to their foods and their environment. We need to research, ask and try different options until we find what works for them.

Gina, did all of the above and found what worked best for her son. Today, Dougy is a happy boy, that engages in conversations, loves hugs and kisses and knows that his carrots need some Dip! I have seen him, I have talk to him and the joy and love they share is an example worth to follow.

How to Treat an Earache the Natural Way

With the flu and cold season many aches and pains affect our family's health and lately I have been hearing of Ear Infections left and right.

The last time I had to treat an ear infection was almost 5 years, with my eldest. Of course, the only route known to me at that point was to treat it with antibiotics. At that point the infections I thought was already pretty bad.

With more experience, more research and little bit of more curiosity, I started seeing a Holistic Pediatric M.D., Dr. Rydland and along the way I have learned tons of great things to minimize the use of antibiotics.

What do I do know? Here it is:

I use:

1. Regular Rubbing Alcohol

2. Colloidal Silver, either Argentyn 23 or Sovereign Silver (these are the best brands recommended by Dr. Rydland) and don't worry you won't turn gray or blue! and,

3. Kids Wellness: Ear Drops Formula

How do I use it:

At the first sign of an earache I put one drop of alcohol in each of their ears just to evaporate any left over water that may be in it.

Then, I put 3 drops of Colloidal Silver, and I let them rest for at least 10 minutes laying down on the opposite side. Then I repeat it in the other ear (just in case).

Lastly, I will put the recommended dose of Dr. Rydland's Ear Drop Formula, cover it up with a little bit of cotton and let them rest for as long as I can keep them still.

So far, 3 out 4 times, the pain stops within a very short time and infection does not progress. Their little bodies fight it, and they are able to build immunities and heal properly.

Of course, close monitoring of symptoms and fever is a MUST. Please, do consult your Doctor if symptoms do not improve and remember! This is only my personal experience and the things that have worked for my family.

"The Classy Closet Swap"

I have to tell you! I found this great community of moms and bloggers at Jen Hinton's website, "The Classy Closet" and it has been an incredibly fun adventure. I have not only found great information but also beautiful friendships.

Jen had another fun idea and this was of pairing some us to do a blog swap. I loved the idea! It is like going to have coffee and cookies to a friend's home and be received with hugs and laughs.

The guest in my home this month is Lauren from "Hyperactive LU". When I visited her blog for the first time, I knew the reason why our paths crossed! She blogs, she sews and she wears her babies! Cool!!

Now, I want to invite all of you to come and have some coffee and cookies with us. We want to share Lu's guest post at Chic Mommy USA's home and also continue sharing some of our experiences in motherhood and life.

Fell Head Over Hills.... In More Ways Than One

I fell head over heels in love in December 2007. Not only did we welcome our newest member to the family, Little Peanut, but also, I was oficially a baby wearing mama. Baby wearing was something so foreign and exciting to me. To be able to wear your baby- comfortably- and still have hands free! What an idea! I couldn't wait to try it out!

I had tried a "normal" baby carrier with my oldest son, Bubbie, but we could never get it to "fit" just right on my body. Hubbie tried it once while we were out of town and that was hilarious- those carriers are NOT made for a larger framed man! We eventually gave up trying.

Around the time I found out that I was expecting Peanut, I found Stephanie's blog over at Adventures in Babywearing and I was intrigued! I couldn't wait to do the same thing with my new baby. I researched different types of slings. I wrote Stephanie MANY emails. My sister in law, Jana, and I chatted about what type of slings we liked the look of and wished we could get our hands on some of these slings and test them out before buying them.

I was so desperate for information on this "new idea". I eventually figured out that babywearing was NOT new.... I guess I had just lived in a bubble and never seen it. It is stil very rare around our town, but becoming more and more popular.

So, from Stephanie's suggestions, I got a ring sling. I purchased a "mom made" ring sling off of Ebay and then also bought a Hotsling. Unfortunately, the Hotsling wasn't made for me. I tried and tried. I think I purchased the wrong size. I could never get Peanut in without feeling like I was suffocating him. I tried the same cradle hold in the ring sling with no success. I wrote Stephanie and asked her about other types of holds. She told me that perhaps a chest to chest hold in the ring sling would work better. We tried that and SUCCESS! Peanut loved it. I loved it. It was a beautiful bonding time. I could lean down and kiss that soft, furry head of Peanuts and still have 2 hands to help and play with Bubbie or cook!

Once we mastered the ring sling, we saw the Sleepy Wrap on a review blog. I quickly purchased it and were thrilled when it arrived. The Sleepy Wrap is very similar to the Moby Wrap. I actually don't know if anything is different about the two. The Sleepy Wrap is made out of a stretchy cotton and wraps around your body to hold your child. It is absolutely a fabulous idea and works wonders. Every time I put Peanut in it, he was absolutely the happiest and most content child. I wore that thing EVERYWHERE! I would sling Peanut in it for longer grocery trips and put Bubbie in the front of the grocery buggy. I had one child tied to me and two free hands to help the other. Even Hubbie could join in the babywearing fun with the Sleepy Wrap. It is so long that I think one-size fits all or at least the majority. Hubbie wore Peanut a lot when we went on family outings. The sleepy wrap quickly replaced my ring sling and became the sling of choice in our family.

Then, when I had thought I had seen all there was to see about slings, I won a fabulous contest and the prize was a sling! A brand new ring sling from Nonny and Boo (who have now closed down). I never knew that ring slings were so fabulous. I was able to wear Peanut in it for a few short months before I found out that I was expecting Baby Bean and no longer felt like carrying another child. The ring sling from Nonny and Boo has been a wonderful addition to my sling collection. I love the thickness of the fabric. I love that I don't have to adjust it constantly, like my other ring sling. I holds Peanut's weight- 25lbs or heavier.

So, there you have it, my baby wearing experience! I have loved the bonding that comes from baby wearing. I love the ease and convienence. I love that it isn't difficult to do. I cannot wait until I can start babywearing again with my newest son, Baby Bean, due in September.

Best Ways to Find your Local Farmer's Markets and Organic Food Coops

We have been discussing in a few forums and shows at Momtv about the need of healthier ways to feed our families. Unfortunately, in the United States there has been a lack of self interest in knowing the quality of our foods. We have been accepting what the mass media has chosen as the best foods and we have ended up as one of the sickest Countries in the world! Can you believe this?

Thank Goodness! A new trend of Healthy Living has arise and more and more people are turning away from fast foods and industrially processed foods.

But then, we are faced with another challenge! It can be pretty costly to eat healthy. The price of all natural products, or organic products at the local Health Food Stores can raise your weekly expenses dramatically. So, how do we do it? Most of us are in an a tight budget and eating healthy can brake us for good. Do we settle for cheap unhealthy food?, or do we manage to find healthy organic foods at reasonable prices?

I have been thinking about bringing you every week tips and tricks to find the best Natural and Organic Products.

This week I want to bring some fun and easy links to get access to your local Farmer's Markets as well as as Organic Food Coops.

I love technology! And it looks that our farmers are getting in with the times too. This were my favorite links to find your local Farmers Markets by County (If you have the option of the County, go with it, you may find information on close areas that you did not have in mind).

FARMERS MARKET DOT COM This a fun website! They have been compiling a lot of information by State. Just click on your State and then scroll down until you find the closest one to you. At the end of each page you will see a link "MORE" click on it and it will take to more and more pages.

LOCAL HARVEST. This website has tons of information and it even has the option for you to purchase organic and natural products directly from it. Prices are still a little high but it also gives you the option to search for your local producers and farmers by State, City or Zip Code. Being closer to you, costs will be reduced.

USDA also offers a link to find your local Farmers Markets. Here I would recommend to do the search by County. Once again, it helps to extend your search to close by places you had not even thought of.

Now, I mentioned a great resource local Organic Foods Coops. I have personally save about half of what I used to spend on my organic produce through a local coop. It entitles to take home whatever comes in your "coop share", but so far it has been a happy healthy option for my family. I have been splitting my share in 3 portions, among my Sister in law, my mother in law and myself, and we have all plenty of great produce for a whole week.

How Did I Survive The Flu without Tylenol

As many of you know, I had some health issues at home last week. What I week I should say!

I have three kids under the age of 5 and I am by myself most of the time. Last week the Flu Bug got us, well, at least it got the three kiddos. What a nightmare! First it was my three year old daughter, then my five year old son and lastly my 6 month old baby daughter. Fever, stuffy or runny noses, body aches, non-stop coughing and "mommy mommy mommy" to last for an eternity.

Traditionally, many parents face moments like this and unfortunately, due to the times we live in, we need fast solutions to get everyone back to "some" health. So, the easiest way out of the flu virus is to run to the drug store and get either Tylenol, Motrin and all sort of cough syrups. I call this the "Easy Button" and we have all been guilty of using it at one point or another.

After beginning my journey on Alternative Medicine, new options started to pup up in front of me. I was surprised to realize that these Holistic Health options really worked! How is it that the mass media had not been promoting it this fantastic Natural Cures for the Flu? (Well I guess it does not behoove the pharmaceutical industry right?)

After my struggle with the flu I realized that I need to share what I know in order to help other parents find these amazing Natural Remedies for the flu season. Hey, they gotta work, my kids are up and running, no major asthma attacks, coughing did not develop into bronchitis, and most importantly I DID NOT GET SICK! Can you believe it! Well, I can! I have done it over and over and it works every time.

What is the secret? Old fashion home remedies, Homeopathy, Natural Herbal Remedies, fresh organic juices and rest.

Crazy? No, I don't think I am. Everything that I mentioned above works, it just takes some time, and as parents we are entitled to ask our kids care givers to offer the time they need to heal in moments like this (by this I mean nannies, day cares and even grandparents!)

I know, you are probably wondering what on earth I am using, and I can tell you that I am using a lots of things.

First of all I use two of my favorite Immune System Boosters: Colloidal Silver and Family Immune Formula. (Don't worry you are not going to turn blue like the Oprah Blue Guy! This was an extreme case of homemade colloidal silver improperly used). As soon as I see the kids with the first symptoms, I started them on an intensive treatment, appropriate amount per age and weight, 3 times a day of each of the above.

In addition, I continue their daily regimen of DHA supplements,and multivitamins but try to increase their Vitamin C intake, as well as their Vitamin D (obtained through sun light exposure).

Ha! wait a little more to do. Homeopathic treatments are simply fantastic. I usually give them oscillococcinum. You can find the pediatric and adult formulas easily either over the internet or at your local Health Food Store.

And with all this and that, my mom's home made chicken soup and warm fresh lemonade. Some way some how Natural Holistic Remedies work to help your family get over a flu. We just need to let the body build its own defenses and fight for good. This over the counter pain killers and cough medications, only stop the symptoms but the real thing is still lingering in your family's bodies waiting to get you back through another venue.

In my case! this is I what always do: Start Colloidal Silver 3 times a day, Airborne every four hours. I also continue my Fish Oil, B Complex and most importantly Immunity Formula I from Shaklee. All I felt was some sneezing and scratchy throat but they soon faded away.

I have to be honest, it was not easy, I had to be right on schedule with everything, and there as a fair share of crying and fever, but the effort is well worth it. Right now, they are happy, healthy and rambunctious. I have not had to run to the hospital for excessively high fevers or bad asthma episodes and I am super happy with the results.

I know everyone's journey is different, but I certainly hope that my experience will help you at least to make a an easier and informed decision, find some alternatives and achieve Health Naturally.

My Favorite Kids Multivitamin

If you have been looking for a Kid's Multivitamin that they WILL ACTUALLY EAT, and that would actually help them...I think you will like this.

My kids have spit up almost every other option I have given them, and when they didn't is because the multivitamins had High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Arts & Crafts: Hand Dyed Play Silks

My son attends a wonderful Waldorf Oriented School, in South West Miami that is simply a Little Heaven on Earth. They have so much fun learning while "playing among beautiful things". One of those beautiful things are Play Silks in different sizes and colors. It is so amazing to see how their imagination simply explodes in fabulous games, from pirates to princesses, from Kings to farmers. An infinite amount of possibilities.

Trying to find cool things to do this summer, we decided to get some blank silks from Dharma Trading Co. Got some supplies and started a new branch of our learning and our family business.

If you are crafty and want to give it a try, follow this How Make Play Silks Tutorial.

You will need the following:

1. Blank Silks in desired size. Usually 35"x 35", or 21"x 21". The larger ones can be used as canopies.
2. Different flavor Kool Aid, or food coloring (I prefer food coloring).
3. White Vinager (especially if you used food coloring. This would be the acid that helps the color set in.
4. Big deep pots and/or a disposable aluminum baking tray. If you want to do a rainbow silk, 3 or 4 glass or plastic jars would help.
5. Hot water. Here is where Parents' supervision is crucial.
6. Disposable gloves.

When I see the staggering and heart braking statistics of children suffering from Autism or Neurological disorders in this Country, I get so upset that I wish I could tower over the world and make it stop! But I am only a mom and I am certain that all my battles start at home, and this is what I am doing today!

According to the latest estimates, 1 in 67 children has Autism, 1 in 6 children suffers a developmental disorder, and 1 in 38 boys has Autism. Isn’t this the REAL PANDEMIC?????

It makes me laugh so hard when I see the “Swine Flu Pandemic” news! Are they being serious? The last one I heard was: “1 Million Cases Worldwide of Swine Flu! Beware! Vaccinate your family and be prepared!!!” Ha ha ha! Excuse me! But the World’s Population is over 6 Billion and growing! Isn’t 1 million like a 1% ???

Ok, let’s pause on this. Do you know that the CDC has estimated that each year in the United States 36,000 people will die of complications from the Regular Flu? So far this year, there has been only 87 deaths reported on the Swine Flu Issue. Don’t get me wrong! Every death is a loss and bigger or smaller numbers do not diminish their importance. What is wrong, and what I am criticizing is the approach of Authorities on our health issues. They are giving almost no importance to the outrageous numbers of children suffering from Autism and Development Disorders. It is not normal to suffer from this! It is not part of nature and we don’t just have to comply with the system and fold in without a word being said.

Moms! Dads! It is time to fight for our children’s future! It is time for us to take control of lives and their health. Health Care officials in United States are not helping us to stop the madness. They are just making us jump through the hoops of medical bureaucracy to assure that our children will have a long life of medical bills covered! This is not fair, this is not right and we have to say something!

For now, once again, our battles begin at home. We have kids to care for the best way we can. The road ahead has many possibilities, but we have to search proactively for them and choose the ones the better suit our family’s case. Here, is where I want to introduce you to a fantastic Mom that did not fold in after her son’s Autism diagnose. She started her own crusade to improve her son’s quality of life and so far, she has reached fantastic results! Changes do not come easy, but sometimes we have to do what we have to do for those we love. "Nothing in life happens by accident!" I have heard this phrase a few times this week and this time has really struck me.

God has an amazing way of taking care of us. His Love and Mercy come in many shapes, colors and forms. Sometimes, is $20 we find in the dryer, or that friend that gives us a call for no reason when we needed it the most. Many times, one person leads into another, and that person brings God's shine straight into your life.

I have mentioned before my struggles with my son's health. As a first time mom, I probably made tons of mistakes introducing him earlier than needed to highly allergenic foods. May be I stopped breastfeeding sooner than I should have(even though he was 18 months); or may be that massive amount of whole pasteurized homogenized cow's milk I gave him to compensate for the lack of my milk, simply was not the best decision ever. Whatever it was, I entered a very dark place, where I could not figure out why he would vomit everything he ate, why would he cough and cough until all my efforts in feeding him ended up splatter on the floor, or the car, or the street for no apparent reason, and to make things worse, he had also developed asthma! Gosh, he was only 2 years and some!!

This is the moment where one person simply brought the love of God by sharing some information, the name of a Holistic Doctor. Yay!! May be now, someone could tell me what is happening! Indeed! What a wonderful moment was when I went to my first appointment. We talked for over an hour about everything under the son. From the type of pregnancy I had, to the birth process, to what I ate, or took during and after the pregnancy, and everything my son had experience in his short life. Which ended up being more than I had thought!

This Holistic Doctor, has been one of God's biggest blessings in my life. With his dedication and his incredibly extensive knowledge, he has guided my efforts in assuring a happy healthy life for my son. We still have more to walk, but I am sure, that with the hand of our loving God, we will see my son grow into a Handsome Healthy and Loving Man.

The video I am attaching is only one of many. But once again, this is not to bring fear or to simply create a wave in this immense ocean. I just want to open your eyes and ask you to please TAKE CONTROL of your children's vaccination schedule. You can ask to delay them, you can ask to spread them, you can ask to give the combo vaccines in separate doses. You can demand to be given the vaccination insert information before your appointment, and you have the right to choose the type or brand you consider to be safer.

Are Vaccinations Good or Bad for Us?

The truth behind the vaccinations safety is a very debated topic lately. As a mother or 3 children under the age of 5 this is certainly something I HAVE TO BE INFORMED OF! I cannot leave my children's life to be determined by the decision of a total stranger.

As a new mom I was faced with the fact of "Obligatory" vaccinations and when my first son was born, I would have not given it a second thought, I would have said, yeah of course! go ahead! Why was I going to question? I, have been vaccinated in triple doses for everything!! (Of course I had forgotten that my arm had almost gangrened twice after two of those combo vaccines). My husband, a Holistic Physician had already been lecturing me about the "safety issues" on vaccines and had tried to make me understand that it is not safe.

The day my son was born, the first thing in the morning for the new mommy to do wast the "authorization and waiver" to proceed with the Hepatitis B vaccination on a barely 6 lbs. baby. When they brought this authorization and waiver to me, there were no explanations, they did not show me the insert of the vaccination to know what it contained. They just told me, sign here so we can proceed; and I did sign it. Five minutes after there was a MAD MAN running through the aisles at the Hospital, screaming at the Nurse that had made me sign that form without truly explaining what it all entitled! He grabbed the authorization and torn it right in front of the staff. I was confused and did not know what to think.

Once I left the Hospital, I decided to learn as much as I could to be at peace with our decision of not vaccinating our children.

I was in shock!!!!!! What is it that they contain??? What is it that they really do??? Why do they get so sick after the vaccination?? Is it really safe? Am I gambling with my kids health and future?? OHHH NOOO!!!!! I will not do it until someone assures me that they are 100% safe and they will back it up with the life, malpractice insurance, life savings, and Medical License. So far, 5 years after, and many doctors after, NOT ONE PERSON has taken that responsibility! Not one has told me, DON'T worry it WON'T DO ANY HARM! WHY? I may ask!! BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SURE!!!!!

This is such an immense topic, that we could continue talking and writing for a whole year without stopping. But today, I just want to RAISE AWARENESS!!!! If you have a child, and do not know what to do! Please get informed before you proceed. Don't leave it up to chance! There are proven cases that show how many of our kids are allergic to one or all of the components in these vaccines. That many if not all of the components are toxins that our bodies cannot resist!! That we need to Green our Vaccines and put our Children's life in a safer place. We will continue to bring summarized information to make it all easier to digest.

A Positive side of Eczema! Who would have known??!!

I have been sharing my Journey in trying to find the cure for my son’s asthma, and today I am so happy. I think we are closer than we have thought.

For a while now, we have tried to stay away from Albuterol and steroid medications and have pushed Alternative remedies to improve his health.

What I have learned through the years is the pharmaceuticals treatments are optimum in Acute episodes, emergencies only, and they are vital to control the diminishing effects of an asthma attach or a severe allergic reaction. They have certainly controlled the symptoms and have helped stabilize my son. Once, his body was able to breath and go back to somewhat normal life, we have gone back to our Alternative treatments, which have include diet changes, herbal treatments, mineral and vitamins supplements, and homeopathic remedies.

It has been a process of adaptation and learning to believe and be certain that our bodies are perfect machines. These machines know that they need to expelled toxins and harmful things in order to balance themselves out. Let’s give some examples, if we have food poisoning, we immediately throw up or get severe diarrhea. Our bodies desperately try to get rid off of what is harming us. If we have a virus, or an infection, we get high fevers trying to kill the environment that allows these to live and multiply.

During my last conference call with our Homeopathic Consultant, I mentioned that my son’s asthma seem to be improving. It has become more manageable through alternative treatments and that I had not had to recur to the Albuterol nor steroids to help him. One of the things that I mentioned is that he is now showing Eczema, and that I was “truly concerned” about this new condition. To my surprise, she giggled and mentioned that “Eczema is considered the asthma of the skin” and that when it appears, in our case, it is because my son’s body is getting rid off the asthma. It is evolving, creating, expelling, transforming. I understood this process as if it was a little caterpillar, that has to enclose himself in a horrible looking cocoon to them transform into a gorgeous butterfly. My son’s body is transforming for the better. We would have known!!

Under the care of the one dimensional perception of the traditional medicine, his eczema would have been a symptom that only needed to be stopped. They would have ordered topical ointments with steroids, cortisone, etc. The only result, two illnesses that would remain within his body, entrapped with no way out. He would probably live his life battling asthma and eczema by stopping all symptoms every time they surface over and over instead of finding a way to aid his body to find the path to expel them once and for all.

We are happy today, because we are winning another battle against a life with perpetual asthma and skin problems. Today, my son is one step closer to a Happy, Fuller, and Healthier Tomorrow!

The problem of the 21st Century’s culture is that WE DON’T TRUST our INNATE abilities to be happy, to be healthy, and even to be positive. Dr. Stacey Green, D.C. is a really good friend of my Sister in Law, Tressy Harris-Guadagno, who happens to be a wonderful Holistic Pediatric Occupational Therapist. They just forward me this gorgeous video that shows GOD AT WORK! It does not matter what “illness” or developmental problem our kids have been diagnosed with. Traditional Medicine vs. Alternative Medicine: What do I choose? When do I choose? Why do I choose? MY JOURNEY. Part 1

Many of us have come to a point in life where we are faced with all these questions. Finding the appropriate answer for our personal situation is one of the greatest challenges. Why is it a challenge? Some may ask; well, let me just tell you the beginning: the amount of information that is available to support either stream is overwhelmingly abundant.

At that precise moment, when we are perusing through pages and pages of debates and controversies, is when we have to take a moment and see what is it that we are looking for? Are we looking for a quick fix that will keep me running until it hurts or bothers again? Are we looking for a simple patch that will allow me to think I am better? Or, are we looking for something that is going to heal me from the inside out or at least, truly minimize the devastating effects of the illness deteriorating our health?

In my case, for many years I lived like a little ant marching behind the other ones, with the load of my aches and pains up in my back. Without asking or questioning, simply opening my mouth and swallowing whatever it was they put there. For many years, I didn’t even know what it was, I just knew it hurt and it hurt all the time. I felt lazy, tired, exhausted, and I always had a bottle of acetaminophen to either help my headache or relieve for a few hours that leg pain that never went away.

Until that day! That Aw Moment! Destiny put in the path of a Chiropractic Physician. A person that took the time to explain to me that my body is the most perfect machine ever created! That my body has the ability to heal itself and it only needs some help.

The change started immediately. After learning what I was truly experiencing, a severe case of double scoliosis, I understood that “There is no pill, lotion, or potion that will ever put my bones back in place. No pill, lotion or potion could ever free my severely pinched nerves so I could live with no pain. I learned that I need to care for my body as much as dedicate to care for my car (car washes, weekly gas, oil changes, filter changes, etc.). And since then, Chiropractic has been a pivotal point in my health and the health of those around me.

My kids have all been adjusted almost immediately after their birth and have continued to get their adjustments in regular basis. I hope that none of them had to live with the pain and discomfort created by spinal disease, and to this day, I am proud to say, that the understand and feel the difference it makes in their life.

Secrets OUT into the SKY!

Somewhere out there, there is a woman that quietly takes care of her children while processing in silence her thoughts. Somewhere out there, there is a strong woman that does not let curved balls affect her path. Somewhere out there, there is a brave soul that endures sadness without anyone seeing a tear… Have you ever met one of them? I have, but they seem to be part of another time and another world…Why can’t I be one of them?

In days like today, I simply cannot breathe easily, walk calmly, or for that matter enjoy my blessings without feeling a burning whole eating me from the inside out. I want to scream what I have been dragging inside, I want to say STOP! And like a little child simply cry and cry until there are no more tears, to then receive that loving hug of a mother and the reassurance that everything will be all right.

I had decided to be a wife and a mother until death do us apart, but my family has been touched by an agonizing and deteriorating situation that has robbed us from that.

Thanks to my loving God I have three beautiful, healthy and active children, but I have lost the husband I vowed to love, not to death, but nonetheless lost him to something stronger than I.

How do I explain to my children that Dad still loves them? It is hard when they wait and wait and he doesn’t come back. How do I fill the gap left by his absence? I am just one person already weary and tired. How do I keep up without feeling the world collapsing at my feet? How do I gather energies to love and care for them appropriately when I feel I am running in low?

I wish I could control my pain, turn it off and put it away as I do with loud electronics. I wish my kids did not have to see the sadness in my eyes or the emotional exhaustion that sometimes eats my soul.

Today, I am just feeling my feelings and voicing them the best way I can. Through my silent words loudly up into the sky. I have to speak up without shame or remorse. I have to LET GO AND LET GOD control my future and fill my heart with his love. I know He will carry me through this in spite of my doubts and I must believe He will overflow my children’s heart with the joy only He can give. For now, I will slow down and quiet my soul to gather strengths from the right source and continue to be the mother my kids need me to be.

Summer Camp or Not?

Lately for many Americans, budget restrictions have come into effect. As resourceful moms we have had to make important calls as far of our spending. Many of us have cut on eating out, movie going, and other sorts of entertainment.

In my case, it has been tough lately, lots of changes in my life that had force me to minimize and simplify in many ways. All for good I think, but there are still those Special Requests made by our children that simply leave us with a hard choice to make.

Summer has come, School is out but in my case, there is still the crave for something fun to do. My 5 year old son asked me to send him to Summer Camp. He is so active, creative and energetic that I could not bare the thought of keeping him away from his little dream.

There were a few choices: Camp at the Pinecrest Gardens, Church Camp, Nature Camp, or Karate Camp. All of them vary in prices but after all was said and done, we both had to make a decision.

The question! How to choose the right option for you and your child? Here is were the budget issue clashes with your kids' desires. Personally, I had to sit and first realize How Much Money could I spend before being able to open the discussion. I cut here and there and came up with an amount. Then sat down with my son and we review our options. He thought about it for a while because he could not make his mind, and finally chose Nature Camp.

It was going to be immediately after his school ended but due our schedules, it had to be as soon as possible. We came to an agreement and stuck to it. The time and money sacrificed in this, WAS WAAAAY WORTH IT!

He attended last week the Magical Heart Summer Day Camp. It is located here in Florida, in a beautiful farm area called "The Redlands" (Homestead, Florida). My friend DeAnna Carlile runs it out of her beautiful 5 acre Estate and it could have not been any better. She is a wonderful person filled with so much knowledge. The best part is that she has been homeschooling her kids for the longest time with amazing results. We know for sure that the Camp experience would be backed up by years of practice and experience on all kinds of educational matters.

My son was able to explore Nature at his maximum. He learned about how to care for it and most importantly how to live in harmony with it. He also, learned to use his hands and mind to express while dancing, crafting, painting, and doing yoga. He even learned how to cope with the sudden death of our host's beloved pet. He had so much fun, that the excitement did not fit his tiny body. Every day was an adventure that was accompanied but beautiful friendships and wisdom way beyond his short life.

My Point in this Story: Times are rough financially for many of us, but if you prepare, budget, and choose wisely, we can still give our children Great Options to learn, enjoy and grow wisely. It does not have to be something big, but we can help our kids achieve at least one of their dreams this summer by working together!

Upcycling! From Gloomy Curtain & Raggedy Skirt to a Blossoming Shopping Bag!

The dilemma:

Many of us have been working to help the environment get rid off millions of grocery plastic bags and millions of paper bags. We have opted for buying or making bags to reuse as we do our shopping.

I applaud all of our efforts but yet I think, we can do a little more.

The Texas Environmental Profiles has mentioned that: "Americans spend over $30 billion a year to manage the disposal of a single year's eight billion tons of waste." They also mentioned that "...the more waste that is disposed of rather than recycled, the more raw materials, like trees, must be consumed in making new products."

Looks that our effort for helping the world by not using plastic bags or paper bags, still has produce a new source of waste, which accompanies the creation of new products to fulfill the new need of "Re-usable" shopping bags.

The solution:

Thinking about this, I have been working on a couple of projects, one of them includes UPCYCLING. But what is Upcycling? Per Wikepida Upcycling is a component of sustainability in which waste materials are used to provide new produc ts. It is generally a reinvestment in the environment. "Upcycling is the practice of taking something that is disposable and transforming it into something of greater use and value."^{[citation needed]} This process allows for the reduction of waste and virgin material use.

Every store I looked had their own bags, which means for many, that we have to have bags for the different retailers, perhaps one Grocery Store may not like me carrying the bags from the competition, or at least it makes feel guilty! So my solution, ONE BAG FOR ALL!! Big enough that I carry many things in one, neutral enough that no one will feel offended, and pretty enough that I would carry it without frowning!

My Project:

First, I found at second hand clothing store a very heavy and gloomy gray curtain, that I would have not ever put up over my beautiful windows! I personally need tons of light! It was in a pretty good shape and the heaviness of the fabric would make it perfect for a Shopping Bag. Second, I saw this raggedy stripped skirt that had a beautiful Flower applique and ta da!! it was a match made in heaven.

Today, as part of my decision to stop carrying all sort of different re-usable bags, I sat at my studio and made my New Favorite Shopping Bag Ever. I sewed it off a curtain and a skirt. To give it extra body I also lined it with a striped fabric I had bough years ago.

I really like it and it was not that complicated at all! It just needs imagination, applying a few different techniques to brighten it up and all done!

As I have mentioned. I simply love Heather Ross' book "Weekend Sewing". This past weekend I tackled the Flower Dress for my little princess.

She had already chosen her favorite fabrics: Spirites of Tillbrook from Alexander Henry in pink, and some beautiful Pink Ta Dots from Michael Miller.

The instructions in the book are very detail but if you are a beginner, you may want to keep your computer handy for some last minute google on terminology or techniques.

As an amateur seamstress I found a couple of things that I change to make it easy for myself.

1. The straps. She explains how to do the straps by cutting a rectangle, folding it in half right sides together and then turn in right out side out with a loop turner. Personally, I simply hate LOOP TURNERS! I don't like how it wrinkles my fabric and then it is just too difficult for me, especially in narrow tubes, like this one.
What did I do? To make it easier, I added 1/2" to the suggested rectangle measurement, folded it in half , then open it and fold it as if I was making a bias tape (meet each fabric edge in the middle ironing them in place. Then fold again in half, iron again, and then stitch closed. (See step 9 & 10 here: http://www.savvyseams.com/techniques/biastape.php).

2. The actual size: I cut the pattern for a 3T and let me tell you it runs small. My daughter is very thin, and the bodice just fit her. So, my suggestion is to follow Heather Ross' directions to make and adjustment to the bodice measurement. For this she posted on her blog and PDF document containing the books "Errata".

3. The length: You may want to measure your little princess's height before you cut. The recommended length was a bit too much for Princess M. So don't do as I did, measure first, and cut later, I ended up wasting precious fabric! not much but either way it hurt! HAHAHA

4. Final result! A FABULOUS PRINCESS DRESS AND A COUPLE HOURS OF INCREDIBLE FUN!

Favorite Books! -Weekend Sewing. Heather Ross. Review

Weekend Sewing is a wonderful book by Heather Ross. I look at it for days at the bookstore until I had to bring it home!!

It has fun sewing projects that are easy to follow and can be done!

The instructions come with drawings according to the different steps in the preparation and construction of your garments. Do not expect color pictures like in many PDF tutorials.

As I try myself and have heard from many fellow crafters, the patters come in small sizes. So if you are not in the petite side, get at least an extra yard of fabric per project. You may end up with a left over but this is better than not having enough to finish.

Make sure you know your own measurements or the ones for your model and make necessary adjustments.

If you are a beginner sewer this is what you must do:

1. Arm yourself with time and patience.
2. Read carefully all the instructions first, and
3. prepare ahead your patterns and your fabric.

What to gather:

1. Tracing materials. All the patterns come printed in the same pieces of large paper. So you better be sure to get your favorite materials to trace the patterns into something you feel comfortable using. Examples: a. Large Tracing Paper so you can use a simple pencil and copy the pattern. b) Color Transfer Paper and transfer tool; this you can use to transfer the pattern directly onto your fabric. c) My favorite: get some yards of light weigh pellon at the craft store and use that as your tracing paper. Perfect size and durable enough for a million uses after.

2. Cutting tools, rotary cutter, self healing mat and favorite scissors.

3. Rulers and measuring tape.

So, get your book, get your enthusiasm and go for it! I am sure you will make beautiful things for you and your loved ones.

Baby Carriers? Pouch Slings or Ring Slings

I simply love wearing my babies. With the first one I had to carry around his heavy CAR SEAT, no wonder is call that! I'm not a CAR! It was a nightmare, soon, I just decided to carry him straight in my arms ...with baby bag and all...not too fun!
With my second child I discovered the delightful blessings of a ring sling. Heaven on earth! Calm baby, free hands, and only my baby's weight on my body. Besides I could keep my two hands on my 2 year old son!
Since then, I started sewing them in all colors to match me or my hubby. Since then is just a compulsion. I just have to have them or help others to know how great they are.

Ring Sling or Pouch Sling? They are both great. Here are some of there characteristics and benefits.

Ring Slings have more flexibility, one sling can be used by different people and can easily adjust to your growing baby.With the same ring sling I could carry my 4 month old and 4 year old. It is important to give yourself some time to learn how to adjust the rings and the fabric. Once you get some practice, it will become that extra pair of hands you were hoping to find somewhere!

The rings may look scary for some people but believe me!, you will get to learn how to use them fast. Practice in a quiet place, when the baby is calm, changed, and happy, hopefully just you and the baby. Too many people around may get you or the baby a little agitated.

The POUCH SLINGS are great too! It is a 1, 2. 3 and done!
The tricky part is that preferably, they should be especially designed for your size. Too small, baby won't be comfortable, too big, mommy won't be comfortable.

Just make sure you measure yourself from one shoulder to the opposite hip bone to determine if you are XS (21"- 22"), S (23"- 24"), M (24"-25"), L (26"- 27")or XL (28"-29"). Pretty much all manufactures follow the same measuring table. Oh, when using the tape measure, make sure it lays over your bust, if falls in between you may get the wrong measurement and then be in for some trouble!

This sling is great for newborns and in my experience can be adapted to your growing child for up to 6 to 9 months.

A Holistic Education - What is the best education to give to my children?

Once our kids reach the preschool time, we are faced with the multiple questions regarding what is the best for them.

Financial reasons are one of the main concerns and we all know that it can get expensive.
One thing I have found is that "Most Expensive"does not equal to "Excellent Education".

When finding out what is best for our children, we have to take into consideration:
1. Their personality.
2. Their abilities.
3. Their needs; and
4. what would suit THEM best.

If you are sending them to Public Schools and are not completely satisfied about the curriculum, try to look for groups of mothers in your area that share your concerns. Together you can come up with extracurricular activities to fill the gaps and perhaps give your kids what they may be missing without braking the bank.

If you are looking for private schools. Be careful, study the curriculum, send your kid for a visit to see if they like the environment... you don't want to get stuck with the bill and an unhappy child.

In my case, after a lot of research I opted for a Waldorf oriented school for my son. It is small and it has become a wonderful extended family for us. He has been able to blossom, grow, make friends, and create a magical and fantastic home away from home.
